The proverbial ‘midas touch’ of Mahendra Singh Dhoni is again evident in his faith for an unknown player – Murugan Ashwin. Pune team had surprised everyone by bidding hard for M. Ashwin and eventually they got him for whooping Rs. 4.5 Crore. His base price was only Rs. 10 lakhs. It means he got 45 times more than the base price.
Murugan Ashwin is a leg spinner and plays for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket. He has played 3 matches for Tamil Nadu and has taken 1 wicket. Yes, that is the record he held. However, he had rather decent performance in Syed Mustaq Ali T20 Tournament.
Profile of Murugan Ashwin
Murugan Ashwin was born on September 8, 1990 in Chennai. After completing schooling education, he took admission in S.S. Nadar College of Engineering. This is quite a prestigious engineering college of Chennai founded by the trust owned by Mr. Nadar of HCL.
He had little interest in Cricket when he took admission. However, he found a different environment in the college. Ravichandran Ashwin has also done engineering from the same college. Since, Murugan shares the surname with the star student of this college, students and teachers used to remember Ravichandran Ashwin while interacting with Murugan. This inspired Murugan to sharpen his skills as a leg spinner. His hard work paid and the rest is now history.
Needless to say, Murugan and Ravichandran don’t share blood relation. They just share common surname – Ashwin. They studied in the same college with the same branch. Both of them are also Tamil Brahmin by caste. Both of them are spinners – R. A is Off Spinner while M.A. is leg spinner.
M. Ashwin is the son of famous Tamil Writer Era Murugan, who has also penned some Tamil movies.
According to Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of Pune IPL Team, both captain Dhoni and Coach Stephen Flemming wanted Murugan in the team at any cost. That is the amount of trust Dhoni has for another Ashwin.
Murugan has also not disappointed the captain and provided stunning performance in his first IPL match against Mumbai Indians.
