Mohammad Shahabuddin: Profile, Family and Wife

Mahammed Shahabuddin is classic example of Jungle Raj in the Lalu era. He first entered the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1990 the year when Lalu had become the Chief Minister of Bihar. He again won the seat in 1995. After this, he decided to fight the Lok Sabha Election and won consecutive four terms – from 1996 to 2004. The end of Lalu era in Bihar also ended his political career. Recently, he was granted bail by the Patna High Court because of inefficiency of Nitish Kumar. Later, the Supreme Court of India cancelled the bail and asked the Bihar Government to send him again to the Jail.

In 2004 Lok Sabha election, nine supporters of Om Prakash Yadav, a JDU candidate and current BJP MP of Siwan, was brutally killed. Recently, a noted journalist named Rajdev Yadav was killed in Siwan on the order of Shahabuddin. No one is taking interest in that case. But, the most horrific incident was the killing of three brothers – two of them were killed in 2004 and the third one who was the sole eye witness was killed just three days before he was going record his eyewitness account of the murder of his brothers. The killing of eyewitness ensured Shahabuddin freedom. It should be noted that two of the brothers were burnt alive by acid in 2004.

Profile of Shahabuddin

Shahabuddin was born in 1967 in Pratapur village of Siwan district. He became a criminal during college days and started a reign of terror in Siwan. At that time, Siwan was a political strong hold of Communists and Shahabuddin was opposing them. He fought 1990 Assembly election from Jiradei as an independent and won the seat. He soon joined Janta Dal and became the right hand of Lalu Prasad in Northern Bihar.

During Lalu days, Shahabuddin had started to run a parallel administration in Siwan. No one could dare to oppose him. He had full backing of Lalu Prasad Yadav. Even local shop keepers were asked to put a photo of him in the shop as a token of admission of his supremacy.

Shahabuddin is married to Henna Shahab. The couple has a son, named Osama. Shahabuddin changed his son's name to Osama after he heard about Osama Bin Laden.

Osama is currently pursuing Law from Noida. He was named as the prime suspect in the killing of Rajiv – the eldest son of Chanda Babu. Unfortunately, police couldn’t touch him because now even Nitish Kumar is supporting Shahabuddin.

Battle with Bihar Police

Shahabuddin used to beat police men openly during Lalu raj. Even IPS officers couldn’t dare to say anything not likened by him. In 2001, Siwan police went to execute the arrest warrant of Shahabuddin aide and district RJD President Manoj Kumar Pappu. Seeing this, the RJD supporters beat policemen brutally. It was a blot for the district police. Further, Shahabudedin slapped the police inspector amids hundreds of people. Bachchu Singh Meena, the IPS Officer who was sent to Siwan just few days back heard this news and decided to take some action. He regrouped the district police and took help from UP police also and went to the village of Shahabuddin. A severe gun battle happened in which two police men were killed.

Eight of dreaded Shahabuddin supporters/criminals were also killed in this gun battle. The intention of police to kill Shahabuddin couldn’t materialize because somehow Lalu managed to save him. Many AK- 47 and other sophisticated weapons were seized.

Lots of police cases were filed against Shahabuddin after this firefight. Bachchu Singh Meena was immediately transferred by Lalu, but by then he had done the damage to Shahabuddin. Few years later, another IPS officer Ratna Sanjay did the final blow to Shahabuddin. He along with Siwan DM C. K. Anil ensured that the birth place of the first President of India, Shri Rajendra Prasad, became free from the terror reign of Shahabuddin.

Ratna Sanjay and C. K. Anil were also punished, this time by Nitish Kumar, for their action against Shahabuddin. Though, it should be mentioned that Nitish Kumar took oath as the CM in November, 2005 and Shahabuddin was arrested in December. Since then, he was in jail.

The biggest damage for the reputation of Shahabuddin came from Sudhir Kumar Singh, a Bihar Police Officer who was posted in Siwan as a Dyputy Superitendent of Police.

Sudhir Kumar tried to help Chanda Babu and convinced him to fight for the justice of his two sons brutally killed by Shahabuddin. Shudhir even stayed at Chanda Babu home for few days so that he can feel secure.

Soon, Sudhir Kumar got a chance to act against Shahabuddin, who was in Siwan jail at that time. He was also an MP and was jailed because IPS Officer Ratna Sanjay had found lots of evidences against him. Shahabuddin was creating ruckus in the Siwan jail and there was a report that he was threatening an inmate.

Sudhir went to the jail and brought Shahabuddin in the field so that all inmates can see what is going to happen with him. Before so many inmates – majority of them criminals and supporters of Shahabuddin – he beat the MP brutally. Shahabuddin was not even able to walk after getting his due from hands of Sudhir Kumar Singh. He got slipped disc problem and a court had to be established in the Siwan jail for his cases – for speed trial.

Sudhir Kumar Singh is from Khojagachhi village near Barbigha. He is a Bhumihar by caste. His name will be remembered in the history of Bihar police because his one act made people get rid of terror of Shahabuddin.

The recent chilling murder of Hindustan reporter Rajdev Yadav is seen as the return of Jungle Raj, at least in Siwan. Rajdev was murdered just because he had leaked a picture of a Nitish Kumar minister visiting the jail. In the picture, you can see the facilities provided to such a dreaded criminal by Nitish Kumar government.

Taking a look at caste equation, the majority of people killed by Shahabuddin are Yadav. However, in Bihar, Yadav feel aggrieved only when something happened or said to Lalu and his family. Other Yadavs don't matter for the community. Rajdev murder can be seen as an example.

Ever since coming out of the jail, Shahabuddin is attacking Nitish Kumar. In fact, he has made a mockery of the Nitish Kumar and his administration. There seems to be some rift developing in the Grand Alliance because of this issue. Further, a video shot has shown Mohammad Kaif, a dreaded criminal and sharp shooter, is seen with Shahabuddin. It should be noted that Md. Kaif is wanted in the murder of journalist Rajdev (Yadav) Ranjan.

This saga of Mohammad Kaif has further embarrassed Nitish Kumar when an image was leaked on Tweeter where this murderer is seen with none other than Tej Pratap Yadav, the son of Lalu Prasad and currently Health Minister to the Government of Bihar.
