Vinesh Phogat was all set to bring an Olympic medal and sailed through easily in the Quarter Finals. Unfortunately, she couldn’t pass through this stage because of knee injury. It was pure bad luck for her as she was performing really great. She had prepared for the Olympic moment since four years and an abrupt ending on her dream because of an on-track injury was quite painful. However, she showed great sportsmanship and celebrated with all Indians when Sakshi Malik got a medal in wrestling.
Vinesh Phogat is from Haryana and belongs to a well-known family of wrestlers. In a state which is notorious for killing daughters and skewed sex ratio, the success of some of women wrestlers from Haryana is worth taking note of.
Vinesh Phogat was born on August 25, 1994 in a small village Balali of Bhivani district in Haryana. She comes from a family with many top wrestlers of India. Her uncle Mahavir Singh Phogat was a great wrestler. Her father Rajpal Phogat who died few years back was also a wrestler. However, the next generation of Phogat family drew attention. That was because of daughters keeping up with the tradition of the family.
It should be noted that two of Vinesh Phogat cousins are currently among top ten wrestlers of the country – Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari. It was in fact not easy for Mahavir Singh Phogat to start training to girls of his family. Lots of eyebrows were raised and he was severely criticized for letting his daughters getting ‘ruined’. How come girls become a wrestler was the common question. Fortunately, Mahavir remained defiant and gave world-class training to girls of his family. The result is for everyone to see and get motivation from. Three daughters of a family has become the pride of India in an event which is considered suitable only for boys. We must salute Mahavir Singh Phogat.
In a patriarchal society of Haryana, three sisters have won Gold Medals at international levels – CWG and Asian Games. Needless to say, they have represented India in the Olympic and hopefully will bring Olympic medals in 2020.
It will not be out of context here to mention that the upcoming film of Aamir Khan is based on the life of Mahavir Singh Phogat. In the film, the protagonist will be seen training his daughters in wrestling despite severe opposition from the society.
Boyfriend of Vinesh Phogat
Mahavir Singh is quite strict when it comes to training. He keeps on punishing girls for even minor mistakes. It is because of this nature that boys of the family couldn’t sustain his training schedule. He has also a rule of not making boyfriends without getting a medal at the Olympic. Because of this fact, Vinesh is single and not looking forward to be in a sort of committed relationship in near future.
