If you want to see the wholesome misuse of powerful technological advancements, you need to see social media websites and social messaging services – Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp, among others. These tech platforms have become a favorite hunting ground for rumour mongers and people getting pleasure in sharing hoax.
Every December, a WhatsApp message goes viral in Tamil Nadu and adjoining states about a supposedly NASA prediction of heavy rainfall and hurricane in Chennai. This year also when the City is coming out of the grief of Cyclone Vardah and Jayalalitha Death, the same message has started to become viral. And, the last year flood coupled with this year Cyclone Vardah, people are somewhat accepting the message as something true.
The message says that NASA has predicted heavy rainfall of about 250 cm in Chennai which will be coupled with severe hurricane leading to all out destruction. The message also suggests people to go out of Chennai.
Obviously, the Government is trying hard to curtail the damage this type of hoax can create.
