William Bentick, the Governor General, was considered as a great social reformer. He along with Raja Ram Mohan Roy is credited to check one of the most heinous and criminal social practice among Hindus – the practice of Sati.
A widow was supposed to get burned along with the dead body of her husband – a cruel practice, indeed.
William Bentick had passed Regulation XVII which is also known as the Bengal Sati Regulation Act which prohibited practice of Sati in 1829.
