The first branch of Brahmo Samaj in Kerala was started in Kozhikode.
The branch was established by none other than Ayyathan Gopalan. He had founded Brahmo Samaj in Kozhikode in 1898 and credited with bringing the biggest social reform movement at that time to Kerala. Brahmo Samaj had also played a crucial role in the Kerala Renaissance.
It may be noted that Ayyathan Gopalan was honored by title – Rao Sahib.
Gopalan had also worked hard to bring dalits to the mainstream and ensured that all down trodden section of society has opportunity for education.
